Tuesday Thoughts & Talks [9]: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

This is a meme hosted HERE that asks us to present something we've learned or thought about after we finished reading a book to anyone out there - sparking a conversation amongst us!

What I Read to Spark the feels:

I am very excited about this weeks Tuesday Thoughts & Talks! It has to do with one of my favourite book-to-movie adaptations, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I recently re-watched the Tim Burton re-make of this epic book. I read this book ages ago when I was maybe 7/8 years old? I don't remember much of the original content in the books but I sure do remember the movie adaptations. The original movie from 1971 was one of the first movies I've ever watched. At that time, the movie Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory was extremely scary! The oompa loompa's and the tunnel scene at the candy factory really scared me! Fast forward to 2005 and the Tim Burton re-imagined version Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is released! There was a lot of criticism directed towards this movie because the original was such a cult classic - there was barely any room for anything to be BETTER. I don't think Burton signed on to make a 'better' told movie but rather he set out to explore un-answered idea's of the movie. I loved how he explored Willy Wonka's childhood and gave him a back story that made him sort of human. On the contrary though, I can see why doing this made the critics angry. Part of the reason why the original was so successful was because Wonka was bat-shit weird and crazy! There was a mysterious aura to him that had viewers curious and anxious throughout the movie. Both movie adaptations I believe paid great respect to the original book. It is a short book so I think there was plenty of room for the directors to tell their own version of the story as they imagined! If you haven't before, I HIGHLY suggest reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, then watch BOTH movies to see how both directors spun the original tale!

What do you think of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Which movie did you enjoy better?

Sunday Musings [10]: Hello...Is Anybody Still Out there?

Two birds one stone - I stumbled upon The Sunday Post Meme hosted by the lovely Caffinated Book Reviewer & the Stacking The Shelves meme hosted by the awesome Tynga's Reviews! It is quite similar to what I'm doing here with my Sunday musings - recapping the week in book blogging universe as well as letting you guys know about what books I bought or received.

When my week rolls into place and I'm up and about doing things, there always seems to be a voice inside my head telling me and asking me about my book blog. I love thinking about my book blog! All the books I pass by or encounter in a week as well as all the reading I do - whether it be magazine articles, online articles or just funny snippets here and there - inspire my posts here. So this past week, was very out of sorts for me because I didn't have time to dedicate to writing posts. I didn't get a chance to really go through all your lovely Waiting On Wednesday posts. So if you guys would like post your WoW down below and I would LOVE to check them out! It's where I find a lot of the books I read!

What took up the bulk of my week was the ending of summer school. For those who've been reading here and there this past month on my Sunday Posts know about my painting course I enrolled in. Through all the hardships and long hours slaving away at the canvas, I am done the course feeling very satisfied. One of my main reasons for taking this course was to explore using oil paints and I think it is safe to say that I can use them to a decent extent. Thanks to everyone who wished me well in this course because I did it with all your support! With that being said, I am super glad that I do not have class anymore! I can FINALLY go back to reading and reviewing more books! (But I do have to decide&plan on my illustration thesis that's due in late August - I hope I don't procrastinate too much on that ;P)

Posts From The Past Week:

Happening This Week:

Review of Playing to Win By Jaci Burton

Review of Whiskey & Charlie By Annabel Smith

NEW Books added to my shelf this week:

Reflect Thursday: Shining Books of Waiting on Wednesday [8]

Do you ever feel after a day like Waiting on Wednesday your list of TBR grows significantly? I wanted to mention a few titles that really caught my eye this week on the blogosphere after browsing the wonderful Waiting on Wednesday lists!

1. The Creeping By Alexandra Sirowy
Expected Release: August 18th 2015

Twelve years ago Stella and Jeanie vanished while picking strawberries. Stella returned minutes later, with no memory of what happened. Jeanie was never seen or heard from again.

Now Stella is seventeen, and she's over it. She's the lucky one who survived, and sure, the case is still cloaked in mystery—and it's her small town's ugly legacy—but Stella is focused on the coming summer. She's got a great best friend, a hookup with an irresistibly crooked smile, and two months of beach days stretching out before her.

Then along comes a corpse, a little girl who washes up in an ancient cemetery after a mudslide, and who has red hair just like Jeanie did. Suddenly memories of that haunting day begin to return, and when Stella discovers that other red-headed girls have gone missing as well, she begins to suspect that something sinister is at work.

And before the summer ends, Stella will learn the hard way that if you hunt for monsters, you will find them.

(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

Talk about eerie? I'm interested to know the reason behind the kidnappings. I hope The Creeping is a thrilling read!

TAKE MY MONEY NOW. I always get so scared of reading stories like this. But once I do read them, I feel so emotionally fullfilled - does that make sense? I just want all the feels sometimes okay? ;P This story seems like it has such heart at the centre of it that I'll definitely be picking this book up when it's released in a few weeks!

Waiting On Wednesday [9]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine - spotlighting books that haven't been released yet!

My Waiting on Wednesday this week is...
Hostile Takeover By Shane Kuhn
Expected Release Date: July 14th 2015

Professional assassin John Lago faces off against his deadliest adversary yet—his wife—in Hostile Takeover, the exciting sequel to Shane Kuhn’s bestselling debut The Intern’s Handbook, which the New York Post called “a sexy, darkly comic thriller.”

At the end of The Intern’s Handbook, John tracks down his nemesis Alice but instead of putting a bullet in her head, he puts a ring on her finger and marries her. Together, they execute a hostile takeover of Human Resources, Inc., the “placement agency” that trains young assassins to infiltrate corporations disguised as interns and knock off high profile targets. As HR’s former top operatives, they are successful until conflicting management styles cause an ugly breakup that locks John out of the bedroom and the boardroom.

But when Alice takes on a new HR target, John is forced to return to the office battlefield in a role he swore he would never play again: the intern. What starts out as a deadly showdown turns into the two of them fighting side by side to save HR, Inc.—and their marriage.

“Those who like Dexter will love John Lago” (Booklist), and in Shane Kuhn’s sequel to The Intern’s Handbook, readers will be rooting for this smart, witty antihero to come out on top.

(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

I have yet to read the part-one companion novel to Hostile Takeover titled The Intern's Handbook but when I stumbled upon this synopsis - it just screamed Mr&Mrs.Smith-esque storyline. Between the deadly job and dangerous love/hate relationship, I was HOOKED!

Who else is completely drawn in by Hostile Takeover? Leave a link in the comments below to your own Waiting on Wednesday I'll make sure to stop by!

Tuesday Thoughts & Talks [8]

This is a meme hosted HERE that asks us to present something we've learned or thought about after we finished reading a book to anyone out there - sparking a conversation amongst us!

What I Read to Spark the feels:

This weeks Tuesday Thoughts&Talks topic is about the Fifty Shades of Grey series. As much as people want to rag on Fifty Shades of Grey - I want to come out here and say that I did enjoy the book and the series. As a teen I fell into the whole Twilight craze. The books took up a lot of my time and so when I grew up and Fifty Shades announced itself to the world as Twilight fanfiction I knew I was going to read it. And it isn't about the sex that had me interested. Christian Grey was a character so unlike ANYTHING I've read before. Fifty shades of fucked up as Christian Grey explains it in the books. It was Fifty Shades of Grey that helped me realized that I enjoyed reading contemporary romance and new adult. It lessened the stigma of reading 'those' types of novels. Till this day I still get people asking me how I can read stuff like that. To which I reply - I'm old enough to be able to chose my own reading material thank you very much and your loss ;) I'm very grateful for the book blogging community that I've uncovered here who support the love of romance novels!

There is TONS of controversy surrounding FSOG (the entire abusive relationship between Christian and Anastasia) that has plenty of people vetoing this read. As well as the outright mention of sex in a famous book has people judging FSOG harshly. All of which has been brought to everyones attention in the recent years. For what it's worth, Fifty Shades of Grey was intended to be a fanfiction that just so happened to be popular enough to be published. I don't think we can criticize it to proper literature standards. When I read the mass amounts of hatred towards FSOG I was really confused. I had a moment where I wondered if I read the same book these people were talking about. I still can't seem to understand where these arguments stem from in the book. If you didn't enjoy it, cool it wasn't for you but, don't judge the people who actually found it interesting.

Did you read Fifty Shades of Grey?
Hate it/Love it/Won't Go Near it?
Let me know your thoughts on adult romance novels such as FSOG, down below in the comments!

Sunday Musings [9]: New Books & The Beginning of SUMMER!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to ALL the dedicated&deserving dads in the world! Dear Dad, thanks for putting up with my angsty-self because no one else could tolerate it. Thanks for cooking my favourite meats whenever I craved them. Thanks for all the times you taught me about fishing & getting my hands 'dirty' because now, I can fish and not scream at the sight of a live fish or worm. To wrap it up, although we both aren't the most vocal about our feelings and we try to act tougher than we actually are, mom sees past all this by the way - she knows we cry at everything, I LOVE YOU and thank you for continually building a home and family for me each and everyday!♥
(I don't say it enough, so I thought I'd vocalize it in writing online where it shall live forever!)

This was a party week for me I would say. It was my dad's birthday as well as Father's Day this weekend. 2IN1 celebratory BBQ was had for him. Lots of beer and red meats were consumed. Safe to say that I'm on a all veggie diet after that! There were two paintings I worked on for class and personal work this week. I've switched it up and tried to paint with acrylics again and it was such a weird feeling. I guess I've gotten use to painting with oils now, HOORAH! I picked up great books this week & I want to extend a HUGE HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY WEEK to Lauren Gibaldi! Her book The Night We Said Yes came out last Tuesday and it's so beautiful! I really can't wait to start reading it!

Review: Penthouse Prince By Virginia Nelson

Title: Penthouse Prince
Author: Virginia Nelson
Published Date: February 9th 2015

Single mom Jeanie Long was trying to save her butt at work by reporting her manager to the company owner. Instead, she finds herself greeted warmly by gorgeous company CEO Camden James...and introduced to his father as his fiancĆ©e. Now she's been hired—complete with a hefty pay raise—to be the fake fiancĆ©e of the infamous “Penthouse Prince.”
Camden doesn't believe in love. He believes in mutually beneficial business arrangements. With his real fiancĆ©e off cheating on him, Camden needs someone to help him prove to his father that he's definitely ready to marry. Yet Jeanie's combination of beauty and bluntness act like an aphrodisiac, and their “for the press” kisses look incredibly real. So real that Jeanie and Camden are either really convincing actors...or they've fallen for their own charade.(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)
Camden James needs to appease his father's wishes if he has any hope of taking full control of the family business. The one last command he needs to follow is marry someone and settle down. How does one insanely hot playboy/millionaire businessman do this exactly? He treats it like any other business deal. With enough money, you can buy anything you want, including a bride.

Jeanie Long just needs enough time to convince the big boss not to fire her. She's got a lot riding on this job and losing it would not be beneficial. Jeanie may have the best timing in the world because one moment she's single mom Jeanie-who-is-struggling-to-pay-bills and in the next moment, she's Jeanie Long-soon-to-be-Mrs. Camden James. With a marriage proposal and a wife salary to go along with it, how does Jeanie refuse an offer like this? Simple, she doesn't.

This is going to be a short and simple review. I just enjoyed reading The Penthouse Prince! It was one of those ebooks that I had lying around and just sort of selected to open. The characters were alright with a good story to ground everyone. Very easy read and quick too. I recommend this for anyone looking to kill sometime before picking up some heavier books or more 'serious' novels.

For fans of Jojo Moyes and the movie Before Sunrise, a sweeping love story inspired by a real-life missed connections story, from the USA Today bestselling author of the romantic women’s novels Sweet Thing, Nowhere But Here, and After the Rain.

During their senior year of college, in an NYU dorm tucked into the heart of the East Village, Grace and Matt struck up a friendship over Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam, and the Ramones. She was going to be a world-class cellist and he was going to be a famous photographer, their paths destined to diverge after graduation.

Even after an afternoon pub crawl ended in their drunken, spontaneous wedding, their visions for the future never overlapped enough for them to be together. The summer after college, he left his “ex-wife” on good terms and went to Brazil to work for National Geographic. They vowed to stay in touch and see each other soon.

They never did.

Fifteen years later, back in New York City, Matt sees Grace as she boards the J train. They’re both different in a hundred ways, and yet they’re still the same. But just as they recognize each other, just as he understands what he left behind all those years ago, the train pulls away. His only recourse is to send a missed connections letter out in the world, and hope she remembers where to look.

My Waiting on Wednesday this week is...
Hotel Ruby By Suzanne Young
Expected Release Date: November 3rd 2015

Stay Tonight. Stay Forever.

When Audrey Casella arrives for an unplanned stay at the grand Hotel Ruby, she’s grateful for the detour. Just months after their mother’s death, Audrey and her brother, Daniel, are on their way to live with their grandmother, dumped on the doorstep of a DNA-matched stranger because their father is drowning in his grief.

Audrey and her family only plan to stay the night, but life in the Ruby can be intoxicating, extending their stay as it provides endless distractions—including handsome guest Elias Lange, who sends Audrey’s pulse racing. However, the hotel proves to be as strange as it is beautiful. Nightly fancy affairs in the ballroom are invitation only, and Audrey seems to be the one guest who doesn't have an invite. Instead, she joins the hotel staff on the rooftop, catching whispers about the hotel’s dark past.

The more Audrey learns about the new people she's met, the more her curiosity grows. She’s torn in different directions—the pull of her past with its overwhelming loss, the promise of a future that holds little joy, and an in-between life in a place that is so much more than it seems…

Welcome to the Ruby.

Tuesday Thoughts & Talks [7]

This is a meme hosted HERE that asks us to present something we've learned or thought about after we finished reading a book to anyone out there - sparking a conversation amongst us!

What I Read to Spark the feels:

This week's topic for thoughts & talk is author appreciation or lack thereof. Recently the author of one of one of my favourite series The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, Michelle Hodkin came out on twitter to mention her recent hiatus/absence from twitter. To sum up, the amount of aggressive tweets and backlash from unhappy fans has kept her away (I am no way saying this was the ACTUAL meaning - I am summarizing to what I took away from Michelle's tweets). It left me feeling very sad and had me reflecting on my OWN behaviour online. With a platform like twitter, I feel there is an anonymous quality that allows for people to feel like they can say what they want, whenever they want, because there isn't a physical repercussion to their online actions. What people often lack to see is that there is someone who stands behind all the words out there in the world - not just twitter. Bringing that back to Michelle Hodkin's case on twitter, and frankly it applies I think to any author anywhere, it truly is sad to see the horrible things said about the authors not their books. Whether or not you like a book, I think we should all take caution in the way we express our feelings. Are they personal attacks on someone or are they working criticisms on their books/writing?

What are your thoughts on online critics/fans? Add a link to your response OR just leave a comment below on this week's Tuesday Thoughts&Talks!

Review: Zack By Sawyer Bennett

Title: Zack
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Published Date: June 9th 2015

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett goes for a hat trick with the latest romance in a sexy series about cool-as-ice hockey players and the women heating up their lives.

Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief ever since the car accident that left him a single dad and put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury and still crippled by emotional baggage, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.

Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

Zack Grantham had what would be a perfect life. Gina the happy wife, Ben the light of Zack's life and his son, and a hockey career on the rise. That is until a car accident that leaves his life in shambles. Gina is gone - taken away by that car accident and Zack takes the responsibility of it. Plagued by the guilt of it, he tries to get by for the sake of his son but he knows that he's a shell of a man who once was. After going through recovery himself, he's finally fit to return to playing on the ice for his team but that leaves his son unwatched. The last thing he wants to do is to hire a nanny but it's the right thing to do. Enter Kate Francis. Poor girl from the other side of town. She's got her own tale of tragedy but she's stubborn enough to hide it all even if it hurts her. Kate needs a job if she wants to continue to go to school so she jumped at the opportunity to nanny. It isn't all rainbows when Zack and Kate finally meet. Quite the opposite actually. He's about ready to throw her out but she's willing to cling on to anything just to survive this job. Zack and Kate over the next days, weeks and months learn to deal with each other for the sake of Ben but the best part of everything is, Kate's the one to help Zack heal.

Told in alternating perspectives of Zack and Kate, Zack By Sawyer Bennett weaves a very well written story of fighting the demons of guilt and learning to forgive yourself. Along the way she also tells a remarkable story of finding love again. Sawyer Bennett creates characters with lots of depth to them. It's hard to find a boring part to this story. I was engaged with what was happening on pages the entire time I was reading!

Sunday Musings [8]: Debut & Appreciation Post!

Most important this week was the release of LAST YEAR'S MISTAKE! For any of you followers of my blog here or on Instagram, you know I've been non-stop posting about this book! I received an ARC of it earlier this year and when I read it, I was touched by it! There is a plethora of reasons why any YA lover should add this book to their shelves. Top reason being that the teens in Last Year's Mistake resemble most accurately, teens in real life. All the little imperfections and flaws that make teens human! I haven't found that in a loooooong while. There were a lot of things I saw in Last Year's Mistake that I went through and so it holds a very special place in my heart this book. ♥ Sometimes when we pick up a book in stores, online or wherever, we never think about (or at least I don't) the author who stands behind it. It is hard when we get caught up with story-lines, characters, etc, to imagine that someone out there sat down and wrote everything that we experience on these pages. I think what makes Last Year's Mistake a little more special to me is the interaction with its author that I was fortunate enough to have. I want to extend a HUGE thank you to the author of said book, GINA CIOCCA! She is such an amazing person and thank you for sharing Last Year's Mistake with the rest of us! Thanks for creating relatable characters that we can't help but fall in love with! Most of all, thank you for allowing me to freak out to you about Last Year's Mistake! I went a little post crazy but I'd do it all again! You my friend, are AWESOME! I can't wait to see what happens next in your bookish journey!

Review: The Law of Attraction By N.M Silber

Title: The Law of Attraction
Author: N. M. Silber
Published Date: February 21st 2014

Once upon a time two lawyers fell in love across a courtroom ...
Gabrielle Ginsberg was a public defender with plenty of nerve and Braden Pierce was an assistant district attorney with a whole lot of swagger. Gabrielle wanted Braden and Braden wanted Gabrielle.
And Cameron wanted Gabrielle.
And Marla wanted Braden.
And Cole wanted Gabrielle.
And Mrs. Mason wanted Braden.
And an anonymous letter writer wanted to keep Gabrielle and Braden apart.
Together Gabrielle and Braden discovered many important things, like which doors at the courthouse actually locked, and that desks could be useful for more than writing. They also found out that the path of love was not always smooth, and it was sometimes tread upon by some really wacky people, like a confused fanny grabber, an eighty-two year old pothead and a gentleman who threw a wine and cheese party in his pants. Could true love overcome a lack of privacy, interference by jealous rivals and the insanity of the criminal court system?
(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

Gabrielle Ginsberg always knew how good Braden Pierce could be in the room. Courtroom that is. She works opposite to him trying to defend criminals who need a serious reality check. One day at a bar, Gabrielle takes enough liquid courage to make a play for Braden and to her surprise - he goes for it. What starts as just a heated night at the bar turns into a fast track to happily ever after for Gabrielle and Braden. When things seem to be going a little too smoothly for the happy couple, danger appears in the form of a mystery letter. Who could it be from? An ex-lover? An unsatisfied criminal? Or family?

Thoughts on this book were that the chemistry was fun and cute but ultimately the story is mediocre. I didn't think the storyline was that different from other contemporary romances out there. The Law of Attraction had some good characters that added a unique spin to the simple story of two people who were first physically attracted to each other, then became something so much more. I think the writing of the story hit a point towards the middle/end where there wasn't anything intriguing for the reader to engage with anymore - things fizzled out.

There's just one problem: convincing his father to let him leave and never come back.

Following her parents' deaths, Anne Barrett is left penniless and soon to be homeless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks, and Anne longs for escape. How will she ever realize her dream of sailing to CuraƧao—where her mother was born—when she's stuck in England?

From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn to each other, they’re trapped by society and their own circumstances. Faced with an impossible choice, they must decide to chase their dreams and go, or follow their hearts and stay.

Waiting on Wednesday [7]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine - spotlighting books that haven't been released yet!

My Waiting on Wednesday this week is...
The Rest of Us Just Live Here By Patrick Ness
Expected Release Date: August 27th 2015

What if you aren’t the Chosen One?

The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshiped by mountain lions.

Award-winning writer Patrick Ness’s bold and irreverent novel powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable.

I'm really excited to share this Waiting on Wednesday with you guys! I haven't heard of a story that straddles the idea of 'the rest' - the group of people who aren't chosen for stardom and greatness! The Rest of Us Just Live Here sounds like a novel that gives us an ENTIRELY new perspective on the story cliches we usually find in YA or Teen Fiction! Sounds like a refreshing read! As well, they pitch this book to be a contemporary/sci-fi YA read, a cross between both genres, which I'm all for because I don't usually read sci-fi but if there is contemporary in there I'll definitely check it out!

Who else agrees that this is quite a unique sounding book?Leave a link in the comments below to your own Waiting on Wednesday I'll make sure to stop by!

AS ALWAYS,
HAPPY READING!
