Review: Darklight By Lesley Livingston

Title: Darklight
Author: Lesley Livingston
Publisher: Harper Collins
Published Date: Jan 2010

Much has changed since autumn, when Kelley Winslow learned she was a Faerie princess, fell in love with changeling guard Sonny Flannery, and saved the mortal realm from the ravages of the Wild Hunt.
Now Kelley is stuck in New York City, rehearsing Romeo and Juliet and missing Sonny more with every stage kiss, while Sonny has been forced back to the Otherworld and into a deadly game of cat and mouse with the remaining Hunters and Queen Mabh herself.

When a terrifying encounter sends Kelley tumbling into the Otherworld, her reunion with Sonny is joyful but destined to be cut short. An ancient, hidden magick is stirring, and a dangerous new enemy is willing to risk everything to claim that power.
Caught in a web of Faerie deception and shifting allegiances, Kelley and Sonny must tread carefully, for each next step could topple a kingdom . . . or tear them apart.

Sonny and Kelley are far from being together in Darklight and this leaves room for trouble because when they aren’t together trouble tends to find them. If it is not a hoard of mythical monsters keeping them apart, its Kelley’s father and mom keeping them worlds apart.

Darklight is filled with new threats and darker and more powerful secrets. It continues the epicness that began with Wondrous Strange.

Review: All That Matters By Youseph Tanha

Title: All That Matters
Author: Youseph Tanha
Publisher: Youseph Tanha
Published Date: July 2011

Ethan Wright is just like any other high school kid that is one day lucky enough to meet the girl of his dreams. Throughout the course of high school the young couple learn to cope with incredibly difficult odds to discover all that matters.’All That Matters’ is a novella about love and life and all that the heart can endure. With memorable characters and a deep story you will find it difficult to put this book down.
(Provided by YousephTanha Website)

All That Matters is a tale of a boy who falls in love with a girl who wants to know that there’s a future for her somewhere in this mess of a world. An average boy named Ethan meets the girl of his dreams that first day of classes and cannot forget her. Amanda is just a girl growing up in the jungle of what is high school. There is a whirlwind of obstacles that Ethan and Amanda face to be with one another but the biggest and hardest one is Amanda has leukemia. For a while it looks like it’s getting better. She’s going strong until the relapse. The ending to All That Matters is honestly one of the best endings I’ve ever read! Does love really conquer all? Do you put your life on hold to help the girl of your dreams? Does she feel the same? It forced me to see both sides of the decision Ethan and Amanda both made about their future together and the ending was a SHOCKER!

Once every so often, I finish a book that unnerves something in me, the story will remain with me forever. All That Matters is that book for me. It is so painstakingly raw and shows some of the deepest and darkest parts of cancer, whether you have it or know someone with it. I found moments that were pure and full of life and than some that were empty and with no hope. The words were simple and nothing to jazzy. They made the flow of this story very easy to read and very enjoyable!

I give All That Matters stars for being one of those knock out books that gives us a look into the world of someone who is affected by cancer. The story, the characters and the messages that come out of the book are truly amazing.

~

I got a chance to ask author Youseph Tanha a few questions about his debut novel All That Matters and here’s what he had to say…

Me - Cancer is a LOADED topic, what made you decide to write about it?

They say write what you know, right? Cancer is a horrible disease that affects too many people all over the world. It’s almost impossible to not know someone this day and age who has, in some way, been affected by Cancer. In high school I had friends who had cancer and friends who knew someone that was dealing with Cancer. I heard a lot of sad stories. Deciding to write about it was a form of closure for me. To finally say good-bye to that chapter in my life (no pun intended) and move on.

Me - What did writing this novel mean to you? Because it surely meant a
whole lot to me & again I thank you for it!

Well thank you so much for taking the time to read it, Sherry. I am starting to hear compliments like that from other people who have read the book and it definitely gives me a good feeling. I wasn't expecting that to happen at all.

The book means a few things to me. It’s definitely an accomplishment. I mean who knew a kid with dyslexia could grow up and write a book? And then find out people like it. Also, like I said before, its closure for me. A way for me to say good-bye to a past that has had a bit too much control over my life. I feel like now I can face the world, take on new challenges and have no strings attached.

Me - If there was one thing you needed readers to know about All That Matters before reading it, what would it be?

Oh gosh. What a question. I guess I would want them to know that I poured my all into this book. It was definitely a 110% effort. I wrote a story that I as a reader would want to read. It seems all to often television, movie, or even a book character will do something that is not like their character. That kind of thing rips me out of a story and puts me right back in the center of reality which I was trying to escape from in the first place. I did not want that in my book and I think I pulled it off.

These were some pretty awesome answers from the man himself!

If you’d like to check out what All That Matters is all about, head on over to Youseph’s website HERE! There, you can read the first couple of chapters for free!

I hope you all support Youseph Tanha’s debut novel All That Matters and enjoy it as much as I did, the story of love, acceptance, and life.

Question of the month Answered! Majority of Us ARE Judgemental!

It looks like we have a winner for July's Question of the month: Do YOU Judge a Book by its Cover?

Majority of you guys voted YES and I totally agree! Why have the covers at all if not to attract us to the content that lies right underneath?

There’s a lot a cover can do for the novel. It sums up the entire story and gives you that starting point of the world and journey your about to enter!

For one particular book, I only picked it up because of the amazing cover art it had! Have any of you heard of Hush Hush by the wonderful Becca Fitzpatrick? This cover is so captivating and it’s a love at first sight connection!

What does Cover Art mean to YOU? Leave a response BELOW! I want to know what you think! This topic really interests me!

Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer By: Michelle Hodkin

Title: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
Author: Michelle Hodkin
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Published Date: September 27th, 2011
Source: ARC Courtesy of Simon & Schuster Canada

Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.

She's wrong.

(Review by Goodreads)

Mara Dyer is just another teen growing up in Rhode Island. A friend and a daughter with a bright future ahead of her until one night where everything seems to blackout. Mara wakes up in the hospital with bruises and no memory whatsoever. She’s certain of two things: first, her friends are dead and second, she some how survived.

Time passes and Mara Dyer is no longer the same person. She sees them. Her dead friends. She hears them and she imagines them so vividly in her everyday life. With no choice left, Mara and her family decide to move away and start fresh with no ties to the past. When they set foot in their new town, things don’t seem to ease up on Mara they seem to have gotten worse. The constant nightmares and images that pass through her mind are telling her something about the night her friends die but she can’t quite figure it all out. Amidst Mara Dyer’s descend into crazy, she meets a boy Noah Shaw –CORRECTION: a hot boy with a BRITISH accent *sigh*. He’s got a bad reputation but despite what everyone thinks they know, Mara learns for herself, Noah is MUCH more than the poster child for womanizer. He’s hot, he loves dogs, and there’s something about him that keeps him fighting for Mara every second he’s got! They both find something in each other that is special and at the same time scary. They’ve got no clue how to control it and the consequences are deadly. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is EPIC!

Every word hung with unbearable tension, every page so bone chilling! The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is going to mess with your mind! A novel with haunting characters, lovely boys and killer friends – literally. It left me scared with chills down my spine and in love with the Noah Shaw! All boys should aspire to be Noah Shaw! Easily one of my favourite reads so far this year!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer hits shelves on September 27th. EVERYONE definitely needs to check this book out!

~

I asked Michelle Hodkin if you could tell your readers one thing about The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, what would it be? She replied:

“I think I’d tell them that there will DEFINITELY be a sequel, and it will be out in Fall 2012 :)”

So there you have it, rest assured, there will be more to the story of Mara Dyer!

~

And now I leave you with some of my favourite lines from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer:

~

“My God, you’re like the plague.”

“A masterfully crafted, powerfully understated and epic parable of timeless moral resonance? Why, thank you. That’s one of the nicest things anyone’s ever said to me,” he said, coolly amused.

~

“No. I hate you,” I said hoping that saying it would make it so.

“And yet, you draw me.” Noah was still smug, completely undeterred by my declaration…”Why?” he asked.

“Why what?” What could I say? Noah despite you being an asshole, or maybe because of it, I’d like to rip off your clothes and have your babies. Don’t tell.

~
